Default Certfication of documents

I know there was a thread on here recently about getting docs (birth certificates etc) certified but I can't find it now...

Can they only be certified by solicitors and if so, what do they generally charge?

My bank certificated some stuff for me and it was accepted. Its free , I got my birth cert done by a brief and he charged the wucking fanker:curse:

we used a local solicitor when we did our application, our application was paperbased we had triplicate copies of everything and charged around £35,
