A CO will only contact an applicant if more information is required. There are many cases where information was frontloaded and the first contact with a CO was 'visa granted'.
If your application has been untouched after lodgement, there are some tell tales prior to this, such as 'application being processed further' (but only if YOU did not ask for more information through PLE, or uploaded new information, or send docs through e-mail to DIAC), and the next stage is documents changing from 'required' to 'met'. Sometimes a 'requested' is put in, and in this case it is normally accompanied by an e-mail of the CO asking for these documents.
A CO will not contact an applicant to say 'hi, I am your CO and I will be working on your file' when they do not need more information from you.
Cheers,
Sylvia

HI Scott,
Unfortunately, DIAC has advised that the Direction applies to applications in the pipeline that have not been finalised, as well as to applications lodged with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, on or after 23 September 2009.
Here's a link to the information DIAC posted on 23 September - it might be worth you having a quick read, especially Q6 and Q9-12.
Best regards
Susan

Did your case officer request your medicals and police checks? If so then the request is probably sufficient. If not then asking for a letter will not do you any good.
