Default Can I apply for Student Visa after applying for PR?

I have recently applied for migration to Australia under Skilled
Independent Category from India. Since the whole process might take up
to 18 months, I am contemplating applying for MBA Program in
Australia, which would greatly enhance my employment prospects there
once I get PR.

Is it possible and advisable to apply for student visa without having
any negative impact on my application for migration with DIMIA? How
would DIMIA view such issue? Should I wait for my PR or go ahead with
applying for student visa? What is the procedure for the same?

Thanks a lot

Hi Rajiv. Funny, I am more or less in the same situation as you. I
have not applied for the PR yet, but are in the process of doing so.
I am also thinking about taking an MBA in Australia, which I believe
will greatly enhance my chance of getting a well paid job in Australia
or, if I don't get my PR somewhere else

I asked the same question earlier today and you can see the answers to
your questions there. It is called "Two visas at the same time"

By the way, what university do you plan to take your MBA at?

hi,
actually i did not see your post as it was not there when i posted
mine !

I am planning to apply to Melbourne Business School. Since their
session would start only in Jan 2004, I decided to go ahead with my
application for PR as I am not sure what the DIMIA policies might be
when I graduate there and apply for PR then in June 2005.

I justed want to be doubly sure on whether I could go ahead with
student visa as in such case I have start processing my Student Visa
Application in June -July 2003 and by that time I do not think I would
get any sort of response from DIMIA on my PR application. So I was
thinking of goahead with my studies there and that way I would get my
PR while studying, so there should not be problem with employment.

But I wanna chaeck whether two applications for visa would pose any
problem with DIMIA? I know technically not...but I want some genuine
advice from learned people of this forum. I do not want to take any
chnace with my PR application.

Hi there,

I do also faced the same situation.
I have applied for skilled PR in Aug 2002.
Now, Im thinking of studying a TAFE course in Victoria Uni in feb
2003.
The problem is that I have not done any medical and police clearance.
In my country, we are only allowed to sent the med/police clearance
only when our PR are about to be approve.
So now im holding back on my studying plan in Melbourne.
Should I just go ahead with my studying or is there any advise from
someone here?

Thanks and regards.

See the following Q&As from the Australian High Commission in London
website (extracted).

They are directed at those who have lodged application in London, but
apply equally to those who have lodged permanent applications in
Adelaide:
http://www.australia.org.uk/VTI/HTML/migration_faq.html

------

I have lodged my application in London - can I visit Australia while
my migration application is being processed?

Yes. But ...

- You will need to meet the requirements for that class of visa before
a visa can be granted, which may include the requirement that you only
intend a holiday or short visit. Visitors visas are not intended to
provide residence in Australia for migration applicants awaiting the
outcome of their application.

... and you must let us know if you are temporarily in Australia so we
can continue your processing whilst you are there.

-----

I have lodged my application in London - can I be granted my migrant
visa while I am in Australia?

Generally no. You must be outside Australia before we can grant you
the migrant visa. You must depart Australia for your visa to be
granted and evidenced in your passport. You do not need to return to
the UK/Republic of Ireland as this can be done at any Australia
overseas mission.

-----

I think others on this forum have applied for student visas while
waiting on PR applications, they might be able to confirm that it's
possible. Bear in mind you will be liable to overseas student fees
until you get PR.
