Bricklayer wanting first steps to emigrating with family
Hi me and my partner are looking to emigrate to Australia preferably Melbourne or Adelaide with our two children.
I am a bricklayer with qualifications including bricklaying NVQ level 3 and a BTEC national award in construction which is slightly higher than NVQ level 3 with over ten years experience.
My partner is also a qualified nurse with three years post grad experience. (Diploma- I understand needs to be a degree; considering doing bridging course in AUS).
We are at the first stages and need all the advice we can get please??
Have looked and both job roles are on list for migration.. therefore looking into get a 189 visa.
Although would like some information regarding how to gain a sponsorship for bricklaying to also consider this route.
We would like to do the visa application ourselves with some support from you guys if possible due to fees of a migration officer as would like to make the dream and reality quicker due to finances.
Thanks in advance
Ian and Laura

Hi Ian,
As you have noted, your wife 'only' has a diploma so she wouldn't qualify for migration based on her profession. You, as a bricklayer (ANZSCO code 331111) are on the Skilled Occupation List as you have noted, so you potentially could apply as the primary applicant and your family could be included in your application.
First step is to have a quick add up of the points you think you could gain (if you assume that you can pass the skills assessment)
You can get points for;
Age
English Language (if you took a IELTS test)
Qualifications/Skill Assessment
Work experience
Have a look at https://www.border.gov.au/Lega/Lega/...he-points-test.
Then, if you think you would potentially get enough points to be eligible for the 189 visa, start reading and re-reading the Trades Recognition Australia website (http://www.tradesrecognitionaustrali...s/default.aspx) to see what you need to pass the skill assessment as a bricklayer.
After that is done you could take the IELTS test for points (if needed) for English language extra points.
Best of luck - ask more questions if you get stuck.
