Basic Job Entitlements in Aussie
Would love to know the basic employment entitlements ie. How much weeks/days annual
leave holidays you get, Child leave, Sick days etc...... Also do you guys get
overtime ie. paid time and a hlf and double hourly pay? Or is it up to each
employer. I am looking at the city of Brisbane - if it is any different to any other
city in Oz.
Also - when a job is advertised as a salary plus Super - does that mean that the
employer pays into the super scheme for the employee?
thanks in advance N

Re: Basic Job Entitlements in Aussie
Hi Nat,
Generally employment entitlements are similar to NZ and can vary from employer to
employer depending whether you are on an hourly wage rate, salary or contract.
Four weeks (20 working days) annual leave year is the norm, most shiftworkers get 6
weeks (30 working days). Also for most wage-earners there is a "holiday loading
payment" where you actually get paid a higher rate whilst you are on annual leave.
Being a salaried worker they tell me it is built in to my package so I can't tell you
what it is.
Where I work (a Brisbane printing company) the hourly wage rate is double-time
straight off for overtime (no time and a half).
Also you may qualify for the "Family Tax Benefit" (remember when NZ had that years
ago - no, maybe it was before your time ). Check with "Centrelink" (Australia's
equivalent to WiNZ) when you get here, about that.
Your looking at Brisbane, good choice. I don't expect entitlements to differ in other
States. Remember wages and salaries are generally lower in Queensland, than NSW and
Victoria - but then again it's cheaper living up here.
Hope I've helped, all the best, John

The holiday loading bonus is 17.5 percent of the basic salary
Yes. The superannuation levy means that the employer must pay a percentage of your
salary(In addition to your salary) in to your nominated fund. I think it is up to 9%
this year. A form of compulsory saving as Aussies are(mostly)hopeless savers
Sick pay..10 days per year with pay. Public holidays. Australia day, Anzac day,
Easter Xmas etc etc 10 days per year.

Superannuitation? Is it something in lieu of social security? Does the employee have
to contribute as well?
Thx, Bogdan

It is a plan by which the Oz government is trying to make people finance their own
retirement years without depending on pensions, handouts etc. The Oz population is
"greying" and if something is not done now the burden on people still working to
support pensioners will be astronomical. Employees can, but are not required to
contribute any more, but if they have any foresight they will do so.
