Which Bank to use ?
Hi ALL
Can anyone recomend which bank to go with in Australia either from experince or from someone elses experience. Just a normal account for day to day living that has low charges and perhaps incentives for first time buyers etc. We have heard and read up on Westpac any advice welcome , please. Also can we open up before we go ?
Thanks
Joanne

Cheap banks in australia ? you have GOT to be kidding !
Commonwealth Bank have been the lesser of the evils I have experienced over here so far. Just expect for all sorts of charges (i.e paying to withdraw money out of an ATM, paying to transfer money between accounts etc etc). I opened a joint account up via their London office about 4 weeks before we moved over here, and things seemed to go without a hitch. The CBA are also pretty good at giving out Credit Cards without waiting for a 6-12mth credit history to be generated.
its ridiculous - also, buy youself a huge cabinet / filing draw, as the paperwork these guys generate is HUGE ! Makes the UK banking system look like a well oiled machine.

Banks are pretty "much of a muchness". We bank with ANZ and have been quite happy
with their service. www.anz.com

Re: Which Bank to use ?
It's possible to open an account with the Commonwealth Bank in Australia via their
London branch.
Presuming you're posting from the UK, what bank do you currently use?
- HSBC has a retail network in Australia,
- National Australia Bank owns three UK banks (the Clydesdale, Yorkshire and
Northern Banks).
- HBOS Group (which comprises the Halifax and Bank of Scotland) owns BankWest in
Australia.
If you're with any of these UK banks you may be able to open an account in Australia
via them, although be prepared to speak to a UK head office directly if your find
your own branch uncooperative or clueless.

General impressions from two banks I've dealt with:
Commonwealth Bank accts can be opened if you're from London. It also has the most
ATMs in Australia.
St. George bank is pretty good in the sense that you can have a "multiaccess card"
where instead of using your limited free EFTPOS transactions (that's ATM
withdrawals/supermarket checkout) per month, you have a VISA facility on the card
too. It's like a debit card with VISA facility; that part is always free and without
a fee. And because it's not a real credit card, you don't incur interest because
you're using your money.
Don't know about the others....
And bank fees do suck, no matter which bank you're with.
