Massive changes planned, some include:

Rise in base level of English to 6 in IELTS.

Bonus points (10) given to ppl who get 7 in the IELTs.
There could also be changes in occupations on the MODL.

From what i gather, it could mean that all people who hold a UK, NZ, USA passport and is fluent in the language will get 10 extra points. People from non - english speaking countries will find it harder.

(The biggest change will be for international students. They may have to get Australian work experience (12mths) before they are eligible for PR)

so it appears you wont get more points for being able to speak english, just exempt from taking that section. Shame 5 more points and I could apply on a 136 instead of a 138!!

The rules suppose to change last year (2006), however from what I gather the rules will be introduced to parliament in Feb/Mar 2007, for a July, 2007 change. I don't think it will be implemented in March.

Mark, yes, you will get 10 extra points..

I could do with the extra 10 points, it would save me from needing an AoS, I believe...

I have just recently been assigned a CO, and had our medicals and police checks requested (yesterday), if these changes come into affect prior to "hopefully" being granted a visa, would I benefit???

Dont think so, coz I presume by now you have specified the visa type your after?

At what stage do you actually specify the visa type you are applying for? presumably after assessment of skills? If this is the case may be worth me holding on to see if I can get in via 136.....but I'd like to see some more concrete info first!!

Haktahsin, no unfortunately a 138 and 136 are different subclasses so you can't change visa type

Yeah but don't forget, even if they do give more points for english language ability they could always rise the points requirement pass mark!!

Hi Guys,

The announcement by Minister Vanstone in May last year which is the source of these rumours stands almost completely unimplemented. The two rumours with a grain of truth may be the increase in English points (but yes there'd probably also be an increase in the pass mark) and the introduction of some sort of work experience requirement for onshore students. Note, however that the formulation of the work experience requirement as foreshadowed by the Birrell Report and Minister Vanstone is probably unconstitutional - see s. 51(xxiiia) of the Constitution - since it sounds very much like civil conscription.

Anyway, Minister Vanstone has gone now and it's yet to be seen how far the new minister is going to take any of her commitments.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Dear BD,

It's just a rumour. Nothing is certain - the Minister was sacked last week and the name of the Department changed, and this is an election year in Australia (also, hopefully, in Bangladesh now that the electoral commissioners have resigned :-). So therefore I don't think I can answer your question.

Cheers,

George Lombard
