Default Apply for 189 with 457

Hi Everyone,

I’m new to this forum and was hoping you might be able to help. I’m an optician with a route to Australia via 457 (Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa). The company I currently work for is willing to sponsor me. However, I understand this is a temporary visa and I can only apply for permanent residency after 2 years. My question is can I apply for the 189 (Independent Skilled Visa) when I arrive in Australia or would I need to complete the 2 years on the 457 before applying? I am eligible for the 189 as optometry is on the SOL. The reason for wanting permanent residency is stability – having permanent residency granted would give my husband a better chance of securing a job (Data Scientist) and would also reduce the risk of us getting sent back to the UK should something happen to my employer. We don’t want to build a life in Australia, with the possibility of being sent back to the UK at the back of our minds. It would be nicer to live on our own terms J

Thanks.

Your company could sponsor you for a 186 PR visa - you would need a valid skills assessment which you would also need if choosing to apply for a 189. The only reason some people choose to wait for 2 years going from 457 to PR as it often means you do not need to get skills assessed. If you are on a 457 you can apply for a 189 at any time if you meet the criteria, but the 186 needs to be employer sponsored.

Are you an optometrist or otpician? Two different things, as you probably know.

Thank you for your help.

Dorothy, I’m an optometrist.

old.sparkles, my company is sponsoring me to sit the OCANZ exams which is required in order for me to practice optometry in Australia. These exams are essentially the skills assessments I’d have to do for the 186 and 189. I suppose I have two options; 1) ask my company if they could sponsor me for a 186 or 2) to arrive in Australia with the 457 visa, having completed the skills assessments, and then apply for the 189 from Australia as I’d meet the criteria.
