Default to anyone who is studying in Auz

hello

just wanted to know if anyone knew exactly how much it costs to study in Auz and if you are entitled to student allowences like loans, grants etc....???

I looked on a uni web site and it stated that the fees were $43.500 per year? Surely this cant be right as nobody would be able to afford to study in Auz and I had heard that it was cheaper then studying in England??

I would be very interested if anyone has any info at all about studying in Auz, either on a student visa or PR visa, as am considering finishing my course over there if possible.

cheers in advance for any replies.

Hi,

It depends on whether you are a PR or not. If you're just going as an International student the fees are alot I looked at a one year graduate course and the fees were $15,000. You're not entitled to grants and would need to have private medical insurance and show that you have the funds to support yourself for the duration of the course.

I guess if you are a PR you are entitled to similar benefits as in this country not sure how the education system works in OZ, maybe someone else can comment?

thanks bkate,
if anyone else knows please comment, as it most likely would be PR visa that i would have. its just i think that the PR visa will be granted and expire before my course finishes, instead of doing a vaildation trip, i'd like to finish my training over there.....

so if anyone with PR is studying please advise, thanks

I am Australian doing a Masters at Uni (part time) at the moment and my
fees will be $18,000 AUD for the whole course, not sure what course would
cost $43K none that I know of although International students coming here
(on student visa) for the same course I am doing pay closer to $28,000.
Undergraduate courses are considerably less and I mean considerably less
(about half depending on what the course is) although be aware that the
Government has just recently allowed Universities to raise their fees by up
to 30% and many are doing this to coincide with the forthcoming year (2005).
PR students will have access to HECS (undergraduate) and PELS
(postgraduate) whereby the amount of the fees is granted (virtually
automatically) in the form of a loan. Read more about this at
http://www.hecs.gov.au/

Regards

If you are going there to study on a PR visa, it will not expire for 5 years once you have been granted one. If you finish your studies within that timeframe, you are in no problems. After those five years, you still ARE a permanent resident of Oz and therefore no issues. The only problem would be if you left Oz and wanted to come back soon. You would then need a RRV to get back into Oz.

Also, you will be eligible for citizenship once you have stayed in Oz for two years and so you need not worry much about your PR Visa expiring if you are going there to study.

Australian Nationals pay nothing up front. They are in fact granted an
automatic student loan which exactly covers tuition. These loans are then
repaid through the tax system (at a fairly nominal rate) once you earn over
a cut off figure in a year.

The undergraduate system is called HECS (Higher Education Contribution
System). Amounts to be paid (eventually) vary according to the course.
Postgraduate scheme is called PELS. There is a discount if you pay up
front!!

Other support payments for living etc are available according to your
financial means.

The key to all this is the TFN (Tax File Number) system.

PR holders - I haven't a clue.

If their uni place is HECS funded.

Not quite sure that the TFN is the key to all this.

Eligible for HECS, but with restrictions if they have become eligible
for Australian citizenship and have not obtained it.

#1. Unfunded places i.e. full fee paying places, are the prerogative of the
very rich!!

#2. The TFN provides the mechanism and vehicle for repaying HECS debt!

I should have added that you have to 'win' a funded place. Many who
qualify - in an academic sense - for a place in high demand courses and
universities do not reach the 'cut off' point for funded places, and hence
have to choose another Uni or another course.
