Hi mandy, glad things are goign well for you all, I know we keep in touch through bebo but just thought I would get back on the site, have been so depressed as not being able to sell the house yet, and if we dont get there intime for starting my course on 1st April we have to do the medicals all over again too and reapply again, more money!!
Hey thats great about medicare, my sister had said that to me, but I wasn.t sure we would get it with being on a temp visa, so does that mean you have the same entitelments as a citizen or PR? My sister first went on a years working holiday and she got everything too but wasnt sure if it was a fluke she got it or not?

Good luck Lyndsay glad to hear the dream is still alive!!!!
All good on the gold coast as you know, hope you guys had a fab Christmas and all the best to you for the new year!!!
Would have to agree qith Pumpkin Blossom in that things do feel more expensive though when you work it out it is about the same or cheaper.
Also, a wee side note. . .we went to Medicare and got out medicare cards the other day. Doesn't matter what visa you have. . if you have a UK passport then you get medicare. If on a temp visa, it will just have an expiry date on it and you would just have to update with your next visa to keep it valid. So glad I kept the last doctors receipts and didn't take them to medibank as got an almost a full refund back in stead of just a %!!
Cheers

Sorry things still haven't moved any further forward for you!!! Fingers crossed it all happens for you before you have to get new medicals n stuff!!
I put a link up to the medicare page, it's termed as mediacally necessary illhealth or injury whilst living in Australia though you still have to get the OSHC aswell. As far as my understanding goes, I think that covers everything. .. but I'm a little unsure about existing conditions. I'll let you know if there is any conditions on the card when it comes in. . .
Take care and good luck with everything!!

Hi Tomar
I have applied for the 886 (brother sponsored) visa but fear I am in for a long wait due to the new priority lists.
I am on bridging visa but at the moment feel everything is going against me. I got caught out by rules on credit sep 07, so had to change my majors, then i eventually put in my application on 15/12 only for changes to be announced on the 18th!!
My occupation is only on the SOL list and I have employment in this field but this doesn't make any difference!
hey ho.!! I shall sit tight and wait to see how it all evolves.
Good luck with everything

Don't want to hijack this thread , but family sponsorship could be a possibility for us at the end of hubbys course, as his sister will have been an Aussie resident for 5 years by then. I wanted to ask you if the sponsor has to have money in the bank to act as an assurance of support? or can they just sign to say that they will support us if we needed support here? WE do have our own savings and don't intend on asking the government or his sister for any financial help, just wanted to know if that is the case.

Yes this is the case, relatives no longer have to sign an assurance of support, they just need to sponsor you so if you need somewhere to stay if you run out of cash..etc So as long as you have the 2 years study and the TRA positive assesment you can apply for PR (you will need 100 points for a skilled sponsored visa 886)

Hay,
Medicare cards in. . . just says 'visitor' on the bottom left. Was at the doctors last week before I had the card in, just handed over the reciept thing with our number on it and didn't have to pay anything which was pretty cool!! I'd expected to pay something as doctors i go to only bulk bills for under 16 year olds. . .not complaining though another thing not to have to worry about!!
cheers

Folks, I've come across a rather alarming bit of news I hope it doesn't happen any time soon -is the minister of Immigration and Citizenship in the process of planning to discontinue and replace the two year study rule for overseas students as a pathway to being permanent residents of Australia ? From what I've been told, the new regulations would no longer require international students to complete 2 years of study in Australia, instead they must have a Job offer in their nominated occupation BEFORE they can apply for a residency visa. And this has to be with in 18 months immideatly after they complete their education. If this does happen, I just hope its not applicable to the international students already in Australia, cos if they do go through with it I don't think any more than 25% of all graduating would be eligible for PR!

It is amazing how many rumors there are out there about what will and won't happen. Personally I would think it would be more likely that they would want the people already skilled to have a job offer first.
They make too much money from people on student visas to want to dicourage people from bringing in their money.
