Default Advice on emigrating from UK to AUS

Hello (G'day) everybody,

Question from a family who are thinking of emigrating from UK
(England) to Australia, possibly Sydney.

This is a request for information websites etc from someone who has no
idea where to start.

Some background information;
We are a family of four -
Husband (42) Freelance IT Professional (16yrs) but with no University
or College degrees, various broken bones that are heading towards
arthritis.
Wife (40), housewife no University or College degrees, varied work
background, known food allergy medical history
Child 1 (7) boy with some learning difficulties
Child 2 (5) boy with some learning difficulties

Both children will have learning difficulties diagnosed shortly, both
are not serious.

We own our own house (with a mortgage) in England but will probably
have GBP300k cash after sale.

We have no relatives in Aus but a few friends.

We have no corporate sponsorship from Aus.

1. Can anybody give me an indication of the chances of us being able
to emigrate.
2. What are the schools like in Aus and do they cater for special
needs children potentially with slow learning difficulties.
3. Do you need medical insurance and is it likely to be a lot with our
known medical history problems.

Thanks heaps for any info.

Hi Trev

You can actually do the points test here which would give you quite a good
indication of your chances - the site also holds quite a bit of useful
information

http://www.liveinaustralia.com/home/default.asp

And http://www.gomatilda.co.uk/home.cfm is full of information!

OK , first place to start is http://www.immi.gov.au/migration/skilled/index.htm as you're likely to be applying for a Skilled Independant visa unless you can get some form of sponsorship.
Husband (42)
You'll need to get a move on, cut off age is 45 for a skilled visa
Freelance IT Professional (16yrs) but with no University or College degrees
OK you will have to apply to have your skills assessed by the Australian Computer Society http://www.acs.org.au and without a degree, apply for Recognition of Prior Learning - that is unless you have something like an MCSE or are a member of the British Computer Society? You need lots of references which can sometimes be a problem for freelancers.
will probably have GBP300k cash after sale.
Great, you have to show you will have money to suport yourselves when you get there and if you have this much, I would recommend volunteering to invest AU$100k (about GBP41k) in a government bond, as this gets you bonus points for the visa application.
I can't help with schools or medical info but I'm sure somebody on here will

[There are ways forward for you via skilled migration.

You may well need some help with the health requirement given your childrens learning situation - not very fair I know, but I have seen a few refusals recently in similar situations to yours.

Thanks to all who replied.

I did the online points test and got 115.

Do you think that I have a good chance given that I'm 43.
