Default ACS Question

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here will be able to answer this as I'm not having much luck getting an answer from the ACS.

Basically I am in the process of preparing my application for assessment under the ASCO code 2231-79 (Information Communication Technology Professionals). This category contains a number of jobs of which I would class myself as a ICT multimedia Specialist. It also contains a job listed as Electronic Engineer. My degree is in Electronic Engineering, although have worked as a multimedia developer since uni. What I'm trying to figure out is if you can combine jobs in this category, and more importantly whether my degree is even classed as an IT degree. I know for a Class A, they require that the degree must be a mjor in IT. I just don't know whether it is or not?

Any ideas?

Paul

Hi Paul,

It might be easier to have yourself assessed as an engineer on the basis of
your degree. Depends how many points you need. IEAust is cheaper and
quicker for Washington Accord qualifications (most UK engineering degrees).

cheers

I don't think I could do that as I don't think they would consider the work I've done the last 4 years or so as relevant to engineering. I had a look at the IEAust site and it seems more daunting that the ACS one to me.

Mabbs,

I tried IEAust to begin with. I have a degree in Electronic Engineering. I graduated in 1985 and I tried the Washington Accord route but my degree was not approved because Engineering Council had stopped accredited degrees awarded by my old Polytechnic back in 1983. If this was not the case, I think I would have received IEAust approval.
Since I graduated, I have only worked in the IT industry and I do not think it matters to IEAust if have not worked in engineeing field. I would lodge my application with IEAust if I were you but before doing so, check with Engineering Council to make sure your degree can be accredited according to the Washington Accord.

I ended up applying to ACS and received a positive assessment in group B. They needed my transcript but I could not provide it due to the fact that the Polytechnic could not find any records of it and they had to write to ACS directly to confirm this. They had included the % of the IT content for my degree.

Good luck.

With a non Washington Accord accredited degree, you can still get
assessed by IEAUST as long as you do a Competency Demonstration Report.
You don't need to have worked in engineering in the last 4 years to do
this.

However, if your *recent* work experience is in IT, and you have an
IEAUST assessment, you may be limited to 5 points for work experience.
This is a grey area, but a point to be careful about if you need 10
points for work exp.
