Default 8558 - MAX 12M STAY IN 18M across two visa grants

Hi all

My parents were granted VISITOR (Sponsored Family Stream) VISITOR (Subclass 600) visa on 14 March 2014 and expires on 14 March 2017. They have condition 8558 - MAX 12M STAY IN 18M on their visa.

Their travel details are as follows
1- Entered on 1st April 2014 left 25 February 2015 - 11 months stay
2- Spent 11 months outside Australia
3- Entered on 25th January 2016 left 15th December 2016 - 11 months stay

Since their visa expires on 14th March 2017, given they apply for new VISITOR (Subclass 600) again now(December 2016) and assuming granted 3 year visa on January 2017 (Also assuming 8558 - MAX 12M STAY IN 18M condition will be imposed on new visa granted).

Can they come back to Australia in February 2017 and stay for another 12 months on the new visa granted(without 6 months gap in between)? Does the condition 8558 counts the periods of stay only under the current visa duration or does it count the periods of stay under previous visa?

Thank you

I would say, your parents have to be outside of AUS for 6 months. So they can come back in June 2017. The new visa grant letter would probably specify this.
