457 question
Can someoneplease let me know that restrictions that are in place on the WHV (sorry not 457) visa. Could someone work on a permanent full contract for around 9/10 months on the bounce (rural location)? Or is this not permitted

Re: 457 question
You are only permitted to work for the same employer for a maximum of 6months on a WHV (417), so you wouldn't be able to fulfil a 9/10month contract.

Are employers supposed to check visa status?

I think that if you break the rules of any visa your are likely to be booted out and the chances of future visa's greatly compromised.

no idea how it would be enforced but it would be breaching the conditions of the visa and if found out you would more than likely have it cancelled, face a 3year ban from the country and it would no doubt hinder your chances of emigrating permanently if that's your plan? The company would probably face a fine too as they would be employing you illegally after the 6months.
You would have a Tax File Number here so it's not like it wouldn't be traceable.
Bottom line is, you'd be knowingly breaking the law.
In my opinion it's a stupid condition but not worth the risk...

Re: 457 question
...and yes, of course employers are supposed to check visa status as all visas have different conditions e.g the main applicant of a 457 visa can not undertake secondary employment, students on a student visa can only work a maximum of 20hours per week in term time, working holiday makers have the 6month rule etc. etc. employers need to check what visa you're on to ensure that you a working legally.

No problem. I'm actually on WHV and coming up to my 6 months with the one employer, very frustrating!
