me (and family) are here on a 1 year visa, so I hope to start the process of applying for residency in the next two months.

The first step is to check the points calculator to estimate how many points you have. If the indication is that you have enough points then you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). There are fortnightly draws and if you are selected you will eventually (time scales vary) be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The ITA is where you will need to supply evidence for the claims you made on your EOI. You will also need to submit police clearances (no more than six months old) and medical reports and x-rays (not more than three months old). You will have four months to complete the ITA from when it is issued to you. If you are successful you will be selected for residency and after payment of migrant levies you will have resident visa pasted into your passport.
