There's no easy answer, it depends on what you can apply for and what your long term plans are. You will need to apply for residency at some point if you want to stay long term or permanently.
IT is on the long term skills shortage list so if he fulfils the requirements for that then you have more of a choice as to visa. Look here : Skill Shortage List Checker – Immigration New Zealand
Your choices are:
1.Temporary Essential Skills Work Visa-no direct route to residency, job offer needed to apply for this. If on the LTSSL then no need for the employer to prove no NZers are available.
If you want to get residency then your options are:
2. Work to Residence Visa - either under the LTSSL stream or the accredited employer stream. Job offer first. You get a 30 month work visa and can convert this to a resident visa after working for two years. Obviously you are tied to a suitable job for this visa and other conditions apply as well depending on which type you apply for...
3. Skilled Migrant Category - this is an application for residency, usually you get a resident visa right from the start. Points based. With a job offer and over 100 points you are likely to be selected at the next draw (which are every fortnight). The job must be permanent ie at least a year. Have a look here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/pointsindicator/ to get an idea of your points total.
Have a look at the above visas here: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/
It is reasonably easy to do the applications yourself rather than use an agent unless you have some problems that might be an issue.
An application under the SMC can take some time and you may need to apply for a work/WTR visa to get started at work. It depends on how long the employer is willing to wait!
Under the SMC the whole family goes on one application form (EOI). For a work or WTR visa the main applicant applies for the visa and the other family members apply for partnership work, study or visit visas as necessary.
That's it in brief! As I said it does depend on timing and what you want for the future. I would assume you wouldn't move the family all that way without planning a long term move and residency.

Have a look at the SMC and WTR visas for residency.
This is a link to the processing times in London:
Skilled Migrant processing times
Under the SMC you become residents right from the start. Under the WTR it takes 2 years before you can convert the application [this is done by a different process to the SMC]. There are some advantages to becoming a resident earlier.
You can apply for more than one visa at the same time so if the employer needs you to start soon then you can let a SMC application go through in the background and apply for a WTR or work visa to get you started in time.
Or just do the WTR and apply for Residence from Work in two years time.
