For the record, I'm not defending obesity- but perhaps whosoever has no 'issues' in their life could cast the first stone.
My mother was 4ft10ins and 16 stone when she died age 57 and I was 25 - years later I realised that all protestations of not over-eating were, in fact, hollow.

I've spent the last few years blaming my weight gain on the menopause - 3 weeks ago I stopped drinking wine during the week - consequently, stopped eating those snacky things that go so well with alcohol and... lo and behold, I've lost half a stone.

Right then.

Bottom line for Kags is that she knows she has more weight to lose to get that BMI to within the limits & she knows what that will entail. i.e. less food & more exercise. Unless one gets it sucked out, there is no other way. It's hard work and tough going. To my mind, it really doesn't matter why the weight went on. It's no-ones business but hers . She knew there was a problemo with the weight and is moving in the right direction . Whether she finally gets PR or not, she is now doing the right thing for her long term health. I say, well done to Kags for so far losing 4 blummin' stone. Keep it up.

Perhaps a weight loss thread would be good. I've seen them before and they do seem to offer encouragement to anyone in that ole >35 BMI boat.
I'm sure also, that most all of the comments on this thread are, in their varying ways, about offering help , advice and insight as to weight gain and weight loss.

Back to her actual question.....

Hi Kags.

No is the short answer to this.

I'm no expert on this. It is a long and complicated process. My personal view would be that you should let the current application go & once you have reached a target weight and have a BMI within the parameters, you re-apply having compiled lengthy evidence and information about your reduced BMI and the plans to keep that BMI down. You would do that because you have previously been declined .

Per this previous thread and a post by Alifox

We have been given to the middle of August to decide.
I need to lose a further 2.1/2 stone to get my BMI down to below 40.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Decide what? Is this about deciding whether you continue with the application or let this application go, or thi about the time limit for lodging an appeal through the Residents Review Board.

If you are going to lodge an appeal for a medical waiver now, then you might want to consider hiring an agent/lawyer that specialises in this.

Will your employer wait for you?

Your priority seems to be getting a visa. I think your priority should be surviving becase at that size you are in danger - and stop kidding yourself about how impoissible it is to lose weight. You'll end up in an early grave if you don't.

I ask again what on earth your mother or your three weeks without alcohol has to do with this woman and her visa? She didn't ask for people to express their outrage or disgust at her weight, she asked for advice on how to proceed with her visa. Your reply "Stop eating" was just spiteful- can't you see that from way up their on your high horse? She's actually a real person asking a question.

As I said before, I'm not defending obesity- just good ol' manners and respect for other humans in the Kiwi spirit

Oh joy. Another one.

If you scroll back and reread her post she didn't ask anyone to comment on longevity at her BMI, just on how she could proceed with her visa application. "Lose some more weight and re-apply; good luck" is sound, honest advice, well meant. Your little snipe reflects poorer on you as a mean spirited, judgemental person than on her as an obese one.

Wouldn't the world be a a better place if people were just kind and respectful to each other instead of seeing other people's failings as opportunities to take the moral highground?

I would speak to your case officer, and see what can be done about this, as soon as possible. I think it is ridiculous that you have been declined on these grounds.

It does irritate me that they use a BMI as an indicator of obesity. This has been debated for a number of years to whether it is actually useful or not. For example Sharon Davis (I think that is her surname....British swimmer in Olympics) on paper is classified as obese as her BMI is well above what it should be for her height and age etc....however, she is an athlete and muscle weighs more than fat.

Going back to the initial thread, dont give up. Speak to your case officer, and see if you can resolve this as soon as possible. I think it is ridiculous basis to reject you on this. Good luck!!!

To the selfrighteous people who have insisted in this link that overweight people have only themselves to blame, read the above link. No doubt one day the full truth will be known but the answer will be 'in our genes' at least to some extent as this link implies.....in the meantime, I think relative metabolism levels which seem to change as you age have a major role to play...if you naturally burn more off for the same amount of exercise, then you can afford to indulge more than someone who naturally burns off less for the same amount of exercise. Fair it is not .

Well then Biscuit - who is perpetuating the moral high ground. Tell me what rule I have broken? I have not said what I think about overweight people. It is not the subject of the OP enquiry. I respect you.

But in Britain the Health Service is getting more and more strict about lifestyle issues such as weight so I don't think other health services, who do not have to accept them, will be ready to welcome someone who is high BM!.

Actually, this comment isn't as extreme as most of you might think.

It really is a valid option, as long as it is undertaken under very close professional guidance to ensure that ALL nutritional needs are met. I have seen it utilised successfully several times. It is a very expensive option, as when done properly, it means that all nutrition is prescribed.

I worked with a lass who took this extreme course of action through her Hospital Consultant, collected her packages each morning from the pharmacy she did loose weight rapidly, she did not feel hungry and was able to perform all her normal life duties without feeling tired and above all remained healthy. But as with all rapid weight loss programmes their is side effects - the disgusting flaps of skin are more extreme. She deliberately put the weight back on to fill out the FLAPS as she felt more disgusted in her body. She then started a more controlled weight loss regime - diet and exercise,

WEIGHT LOSS IS NOT A QUICK FIX SOLUTION AND SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS ONE.

All the points raised are valid BUT when someone is in pain and wanting moral support it's not nice to be so blatant.

Karen knows what the weight issue is and has already started addressing this problem come on she has already lost 56 pounds (more by now) that's a hell of a lot of weight to shift and is continuing with her success. She is loosing weight as you should, slow and steady with exercise. Karen rightly deserves a pat on the back.

Thanks Pauline,
I could have gone the quick fix root, but I decided that the way to do it was exercise and a health eating plan. Some people on this website will be amazed by what I was told by my GP and Personal Trainer, is that I did not eat enough during the day. I have actually increased my in take and it has worked as well as gong the gym twice at day. I go at 6.30 every morning and after work at 3pm. Two sessions each work with a personal trainer.

Metabolism point again...eating a little and often and not skipping breakfast (as many overweight people do myself included) means you burn up more etc etc

Glad to hear you could lose weight - but there really was no need to be so impolite and un-helpful with your comments - thats just being nasty - Kags just needs lots of encouragement and (good) advise. We all need a bit of helpful encouragement, please!!

I completely agree with this point, my OH has a high BMI but he is built like the back end of bus and it is all muscle not fat, from lifting car engines and tyres all day! It's not a fair indicator.
