Quickie reply to welcome you to the NZ forum
New Zealand is in recession just as everywhere else is. There has been a HUGE slowdown in work for the trades. It may be possible for you to pick up a job offer but I think you'd need to be here now to make that possible. Just my opinion mind you.
My husband works on new builds as a plumber and has seen reduced hours since the beginning of 2009. Many tradesmen around us have been asked to take their holidays as work is quiet and some have been laid off. This applies to both employed and contracted tradesmen.
Having said that there are current job vacancies to be seen on SEEK
Are you thinking to migrate here or to come try it out for a year or so?

Re: HI EVERYONE, NEWBY NEEDS HELP
As Bev says, unfortunately I think you might struggle to find work here too at the mo.
Doesn't help that this is a land full of Chippies
Most supervisors or managers here in the building game have got an apprenticeship as a carpenter. Now things have quietened down, lots of them are going 'back to their roots'.
Good Luck to you both
