Hi folks , i am wondering what the best approach is to apply for a work permit .I have a positive LMO and job offer from my future employer in New Brunswick.I am in the Auto Repair trade .We have our house to sell at the minute amongst other things and my employer wants me there asap.
My question is this , what do i put on awork permit application as for intended start of work date? , if i am not sure when we will be able to go , house sale pending.
Am i able to apply at poe and if so what will i need ?
what are the current processing times for work permits in the Uk based Canadian Embassy?
any info greatly appreciated .
thansk Dave

Congrats on receiving the positive LMO!
When applying at POE, the work permit will start there and then. We were never asked for the specific date we would actually commence work. (You don't need to fill out the WP application form when applying at POE, or get canadian-sized passport photos.)
The main things you need:
Copy of LMO
Passport
WP fees
Job offer/contract
Of course it's always wise to take along anything you might need, if questioned. Such as work related diplomas and a copy of your CV.

Sprucemoose is exactly right with the procedure for collecting the WP at the POE, BUT your LMO will have a date on it saying that the WP has t be issued before that date. For instance phil's LMO was dated 8/11/06 and had to use it by 2/4/07 so check that out.
Can you not put to be advised for the date you are to start work or date the application for 1/10 our something ? But you would only have to do this if you applied for the WP approvall through London.
There is a thread for WP timelines - do a forum search for that and you should be able to find out that info

So to recap ,it looks like I will have a limit of 4 months to use my LMO and job offer to get a work permit.
I can get one at poe (what will my family require ? wife not working ,son 16 going to school and 2 year old daughter ).
Can I get a work permit on the way in for our reccy trip and then fly back to uk .To then use the work permit to start work on return to _Canada when everything is sorted ?
How long is permit valid for and who decides.
Will I need a medical first? auto trade
Shall I send a copy of LMO and job offer to accompany my PR VISA application.?
thanks for the replies so far.really helpful.
cheers Dave

You need to check out what your date is on the LMO

Depends on the province whether you would need study permit for the 16 year old. For you wife to be able to work you have to be employed in certain classification group

Can't see why not
How long is permit valid for and who decides.
Does your LMO not say how long it has been approved for ? Should be on the second page (first page being the covering HRDSC letter) about half way down - comes under "Duration of Employment". Immigration decides on how long your work permit is for but probably use this date as a guideline
Will I need a medical first? auto trade
No - only need medical if you are in healthcare or education
Shall I send a copy of LMO and job offer to accompany my PR VISA
application.?
I would and also a payslip too as supporting evidence etc for your extra pont and fast tracking if you submit to London
thanks for the replies so far.really helpful.

Given it a lot a thought and hence my posts , i am still researching.I seem to get a lot of contradictory information.Especially when i look at the Canadian embassy website.
For instance upon there it says when applying ;
Accompanying children wishing to attend primary or secondary school in Canada must obtain a study permit. They are not required to complete a separate application form but please include the processing fee of $125 per study permit when submitting your application. If you are destined to the province of Quebec, please apply for study permits for your children after your arrival in Canada.
When i asked the local government education officials in New Brunswick they said i would not require one as long as i had a work permit.
Another contradictory piece of info is this ;
What is a work permit? What is a study permit?
A work permit or study permit gives a foreign national permission to work or study temporarily in Canada.
In most cases, the foreign national must apply to a Canadian Embassy abroad for a work permit or study permit before leaving for Canada. Once the application is accepted, the foreign national receives a letter informing him of the acceptance and authorizing him to proceed to Canada to work or study (or both). The permit itself is printed and given to the foreign national by the immigration officer at the point of entry to Canada (airport or border crossing).
So does this mean that i wont receive a work permit if i applied for it here anyway and would only get approval of it , obtaining one at the POE in the first place even after all the form filling in at this end , sending it off to London CIC.
I understand Tangram that you could miscontrue that i have not researched this matter but i assure you i have looked into it a lot and have felt it is time to get some real answers from people that are on here and have done it.
I want to be in a position where i can say " This is how we will do it ! " I dont want to be waiting here forever and a day for a work permit , when it appears that i can travel over there and gain one at POE .
Im just trying to clarify things i have read and been informed .
Its a pity no-one could actually run throught the small details that were involved when applying at POE .
ie did you take a police record check , how long a process, do they operate through the night (opening hours )How lon after process did you receive permit .Did you require a forwarding address for it .(As if i was to do it on the reccy trip our address would be in the UK until we had a property )
Surely Tangram you can see what i mean.Im ploughing through as many pieces of info i can to enable the best outcome for my family and i.
Cheers anyway for the info so far
thanks Dave

Hi hun
The Study Permit thing is a sticky one at the mo.
People who are applying at London seem to have to purchase them whilst I picked mine up at POE and didnt need them and also confirmed this with the local education authority
