Hi

I am french currently employed as an engineer in information technology and I wonder
if by any chance I can get the right to immigrate to Quebec with a valid work permit,
I can also work outside Quebec (but still within Canada) ?

In any case how long a work permit can be valid ?

You are mixing up two different issues here. Immigrate means move permanently to a
new country and make that country your permanent place of residence, while moving
with a work permit is temporary only.

So, if you immigrate to Quebec and after landing become Canadian PR then you may work
and live anywhere in Canada. But if you come to Canada temporary with Employment
Authorization then such permit is issued for the particular job with particular
employer and you cannot change job without applying for new EA.

Work permit are usually restricted to certain employers at certain = locations.

If you get a work permit and the company is in Quebec and the company = only wishes
you to work at their location, that will be what is on the = permit.

If you switch companies, you will have to obtain another work permit = listing the
new company and location.

First of all thank you all for your prompt and meaningful replies !

When talking about immigrating to Quebec (and Canada) I was thinking of having a
legal permanent work permit disconnected to any particular job. In this case I would
inevitably (related to what you said Mr Andrew Miller) need to have a permanent
residency status. I think having a PR status would be different from having
citizenship in Canada or correct me if I am wrong. The only constraints I see for now
are that I have to stay in the country a certain amount of continuous time every year
and for sure pay income taxes while I am living there.

According to you I can ask for PR in Canada after I get to Quebec under PR status (my
primary objective) ?

Another concern, are there any limited quotas according to country of origin much
like in the US ? I guess americans and britishes nationals wishing to have PR status
in Canada or Quebec province receive special treatment ?

Canadian Permanent Residents must reside for at least 183 days in any 12 months
period in Canada to maintain PR status. And yes, Canadian PR can live and work
anywhere in Canada without asking for any work permits. After accumulating 3 years
(1,095 days) of presence in Canada within 4 years a PR may apply for Canadian
citizenship.

You cannot apply for permanent resident status from within Canada, you must do it
through one of many Canadian visa post abroad.

Canada doesn't have any immigration quotas. We have goals we want to achieve every
year, but the are not limits.
