Default Work permit

I'm on a work permit (wp) and since the company I'm working for is going through bad days (really bad days), I'm wondering what will happen in case of a layoff.
- Will I be able to at least stay here in Canada until the current WP expires(This is not an open WP, so working for another employer without WP is not possible)
- Will I be able to apply for another WP within Canada if I find any other job (or do I have to apply abroad)?
Thanks.

A work permit is just a visitor with permission to work, so you could stay as visitor to the expiry of the wp. If you find another job and it is certified by HRDSC, you can apply to Vegreville for another work permit.

In case of a layoff:
- Do I have to inform CIC myself? Or is it the job of my employer?
- What about the provincial health insurance card etc.?

Thanks.
