Will PR be granted immediately?
Dear folks,
I was recently granted the immigrant visa to Canada, unfortunately they gave
me such short notice. My visa was finalised last Fri, i.e. Jan 10 and I have
to enter Canada by April 6th. This means I have to pack, quit my job and
settle all the necessary things before I leave. Does anyone know of any way
I can delay this, as the officer at the high comm asked me to make an entry
first before coming out again.
So, my question is, when does one actually become a PR? Immediately? I read
on the Canadian citizenship website that BC and Ontario takes 3 months to
issue PR card.
Would appreciate if someone can describe the landing process to me up till
when we receive the Social security and health insurance card.
Thanks.
PE Tan

Re: Will PR be granted immediately?
You cannot extend that visa expiration date so it is vital you land before
that date.
You become a PR as soon as you have completed the paper work at the
immigration desk. The PR card takes more like 4-6 weeks not 3 months (you
may be thinking of the provincial health care OHIP which doesnt kick in till
3 months after you start livin in Ontario) but you are a PR as soon as you
land not when the card arrives, thats just proof of status.
So technicaly you can land and become a PR and then return home and finish
up your moving and so forth if you do not have time before you have to land,
better to do that than lose yoru whole PR visa and have to re apply.
You may have trouble re-entering without the PR card though so it may be
best if you can to wait a few weeks for that card before returning, unless
you have freinds or family in Canada who can take delivery and forward it to
you? alternativly you could apply for a temporary travel document in your
home country and use that to reenter Canada.

An individual becomes a permanent resident immediately upon successful
conclusion of the landing process. The subsequent issuance of the
permanent resident card does not have a bearing on such status.
Failure to land by the date prescribed will invalidate those documents,
and would typically mean that you must reapply to be eligible to be a
permanent resident.
All permanent residents are now required to be physically present in
Canada for at least 730 days in every five-year period after becoming a
permanent resident. The allowable absence may be used to conclude your
affairs and return to Canada.

Dear all,
I am grateful for all the replies, thank you. I have one more question,
what is the process at the immigration? I want to be mentally prepared.

Re: Will PR be granted immediately?
It's nothing to be worried about. you will basicaly go to the normal
passport control ( i am presuming you are coming in by plane) and there you
just explain you are going to land as a PR and show them yoru passport etc
and they will direct you through to the main immigration point. You wait
there until an officer is ready to see you and then they will take yoru
passport and landing papers etc and basicaly go through them, ask you some
standard questions like have you ever been convicted of a crime, has your
situation changed since you applied (like have you got married as some
people seem to do all teh time after getting PR) and then they will most
liekly ask to see yoru settlement funds as well etc and then they will now
as well take details for the PR card and take your picture if you haven't
got a suitabel one to hand and take those details then thats pretty much the
immigration part done i think. You then go get yoru bags and then ehad
through to customs (red channel as you have stuff to declare) and you tell
them you are a new PR and give them yoru lists of goods with you ang goods
to follow they will have alook ttrough to make sur eyou did the list right
and then stamp it, they rarely look through your stuff, and then you will
emerge into Canada as a new PR.
