Default Will PR card be necessary if driving accross the border???

Hi everyone,

here is the question. CIC website states the following:

"As of December 31, 2003, the PR card will be the proof of status
document required by permanent residents seeking to re-enter Canada on a
commercial carrier (airplane, boat, train or bus)."

That is an exact quote. What about if I drive my own vehicle after Dec.
31 to US for a few days and then drive it back? That's not a commercial
carrier. Will I still require a PR card???

Thanks in advance.

For a while after the deadline you shouldn't have much problem entering
Canada without PR Card by road, as long as you can prove that you have valid
PR status. But expect things getting tighter and some grilling at the
border. Do yourself a favor and get the Card.

Thanks for your reply. Well, I have applied for the card a few months
ago and still had not reply. I heard that it takes several months now.
I was just wondering, if I go visit my sister in Detroit for Christmas
and come back on say Jan 2nd, will they fry my but at the border if I
still have no PR card? So, you think they might not.

Thanks for your reply once again.

Your butt will not be fried, maybe just a little bit steamed... :-)

You will have to answer quite few questions in respect to your status in and
length of absence from Canada. So, make sure that you carry proper documents
to prove your claims.

If you are driving a car with Ontario plates from Detroit to Windsor you wil
probably ask : Where do you live and pass you thru. Don't sweat it!

if you have the evidence, such as a copy of mail receipt for the application
of PR card, then carry it with you.
