When was it good to be in IT in Canada?
Hi!
This might not be considered an immigration issue, but since there are many IT (new
or would-be) immigrants in this newsgroup, I thought many will be interested.
When was the last time that IT was in demand in Canada? What kind of jobs were
commonly advertised (e.g., database programmer, system analyst, database
administrator, etc.)? What kind of compensation packages were typical?
For those who had been in Canada long enough, do you think there will be a resurgence
of the demand for IT workers? If you do, any idea when that would be?
Any comments/input will be appreciated. Thanks!
Greg

The IT market seems to be very difficult currently. The minimum years of experience
required is at least 5-6 years... There are very few opportunities that are
advertised. It is better if you know somebody inside IT firms in Toronto whom can get
you a job. Employers rank foreign qualifications as zero here.
I know some people who are doing odd jobs for almost 8 months now.
It is so depressing....
Papers say that the market might rebound in abt 2 years time.... Yeah, right..
If do not have any luck... be prepared to do odd jobs to survive....

It still is, but I wouldn't be in web work for any amount of money. There are a lot
of out of work web techs here in Toronto.
I'd recommend specialising. My chosen field of PostScript isn't huge, but the demand
is there if you have the experience.

The company I work for shrunk from 45 in the boom days to 25 in Jan 2002. And yet, we
survived, new business is coming in and we closed 4 new hires full-time this month.
We plan to grow to about 35-40 by the end of the year. Some sectors are bad,
particularly telco. However, watch out for the banks/finance as IT spending is on the
rise again.

Re: When was it good to be in IT in Canada?
Greetings All,
Just wanted to let you all know that I helped the Job Rate spike for March. I started
work in March. Did'nt quite make the $100K mark, but close enough. I know that I can
conquer that hurdle sooner than later.
Saying that IT in general is in a slump is misleading. Telecom and certain other
areas are certainly hit hard, but there are others that are thriving and growing,
just looking at the number of people who were recruited along with me.
On another note, I still think that there is no level playing field for immigrants,
and a Canadians first attitude does exist in the workplace. This is a very misguided
view and certainly hurts the company that is hiring in the long run as they are not
getting the most capable person for the job.
regards,
enigma

Re: When was it good to be in IT in Canada?
What are the Chances of getting a job in Toronto area?
I need the info for Network Engineer, with 8 years exp in India and 3 years work exp in USA. I have been also a Trainer in USA and India; I have the certifications like:
MCSE WIN2K, MCSE NT.4, MCT, CNE, CNI, CCNA
If it is difficult to find a job in Networking can I find a job as Trainer and later continue searching for Network job?
I am Landing as PR in First week of April in Toronto from US.
Thanks in advance

I Think Networking or Software Eng, NT Admin, have good chance and still they can get a job in Toronto, I hope you have to start at lower level after you reach Toronto.

Hi All,
How about someone with more than 6 years experience in Oracle DBA with Oracle OCP
Certified in Oracle8i and Oracle9i?
How long to take before landing a job?
