Default What exactly does "Approval in Principle" mean?

This probably isn't the first time this has been asked ... prolly won't be
the last either LOL

What exactly does "Approval in Principle" mean and after you get it how long
till the process is finished after recieving that letter..... till he is
considered a PR?
He hasn't actually recieved the letter yet... but according to e-client it
was sent out on the 23rd.

Thanks in advance

I'm not entirely sure why CIC still uses the phrase "approval in principal"
as it doesn't seem as relevant under the new law.

Under the old law, an inland application had to be made on Humanitarian and
Compassionate grounds. So the first thing they did was make you succesfully
pass your medical and they gace your application an initial consideration to
see whether the Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds would be accepted. If
they were then they would send you a letter saying you had been excused from
the terms of the law saying you had to apply outside Canada and so now your
application would be finalised from within Canada. They called this
"approval in principal" the AIP. At this stage you knew everything was fine
in principal and it was just a matter of another wait for the PR status
which could be several more months. They allowed you to apply for a work
permit so you could work etc.

Under the new rules there is no need for the Humanitarian and Compassionate
part, and the letter they send now that is being reffered to as the AIP is
more an indication processing is pretty much complete and they are sending
your application to your local office for finalisation. You can still apply
for a work permit etc, however many people have found they end up with their
PR before the work permit even arrives, or shortly after which is kind of a
waste of $150.

So under the current law the AIP is the letter CPC Vegreville sends you
saying they have completed your application and are sending it to your local
office who will then contact you for a landing date. That can take anywhere
from a couple of weeks to a month or two.

However it appears some cases are sent to local offices for special reviews
when Vegreville can't process them fully in some way and this takes a lot
longer, doesn't seem too common, but has happened to a couple of people and
is quite confusing.
