What ever happened to the government's plan to rewrite the Citizenship Act (last
year's Bill C-16)?
As far as I can tell from examining the info on Parliament's web site
(http://www.parl.gc.ca), this government bill has not yet been reintro- duced in the
current Parliament.
The previous Parliament's Bill C-16, as many people in this group will recall, had
passed the House of Commons and was being discussed in a Senate committee when
Parliament was dissolved for last fall's election. As with any bill that "dies on the
order paper", it would have to be reintroduced and reconsidered all over again from
scratch (in both houses) in order to become law.
Please note that I am =NOT= talking about the overhaul of the Immigra- tion Act (Bill
C-11 in the current Parliament).

There is an indication that it will be re-introduced in the Fall session. An odd
rumour is that since is not a monetary bill that it will be introduced in the Senate
first (Yes this can be done) and the Senate would have first kick at the cat rather
than Parliament. Might be done this way as there is not much legislation from the
Spring sitting still in the Senate, so something for the old boys and girls to do,
while new legislation is going through the house.
