Which way would you go to get into Canada?

We are a family of 5. 34, 31, 10, 8 & 4. Hubby has a HND in Software Development & a BTEC in Software development (both were 2 years long) and has worked as a senior web developer/systems programmer for the last 18 years. I did a few AS levels in college and have worked as a web developer for the past 13 years. He knows the basics in french but took a practise test for the TEF and failed so he's going to see if he can do a refresher course to help him pass to add extra points to the crs if neededbut looking at the test if he scores mid to low on it it's only 4 extra points so I don't know if it's worth it. My eldest is due to start secondary school september 2019 so we would ideally like to be moved before then so it doesn't mess her around too much. Youngest is starting reception in september this year. Neither of us have worked or studied in Canada.

We are looking to move to Ontario as hubby has an Aunt and Uncle living in Blue Mountains. I also have a few people I know in Toronto and 1 person in Montreal so either/or is perfect. I don't know what else there is to say about us really.

Here are our scores:
  • Age = 75
  • Level of education = 112
  • Official Languages = 128
    • First Official Language = 128
    • Second Official Language = 0
  • Level of education = 6
  • First Official Languages = 20
  • Canadian work experience = 0
  • A) Official Language proficiency and education = 25
  • B) Canadian work experience and education = 0
  • A) Official Language proficiency and foreign work experience = 50
  • B) Canadian and foreign work experience = 0
Provincial nomination = 0
Job offer = 0
Study in Canada = 0
Sibling in Canada = 0
French-language skills = 0

Grand total = 416

Is it worth applying now and see if we get picked? or try for a job?

I think you may have calculated the education incorrectly - 112 points would be if he did a 3 or more year full time course for ONE subject.. not sure that 2 years for one and then 2 years for the other counts in the same way. Christmasoompa?

Officially it says: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...stem/grid.html

Bachelor's degree OR a three or more year program at a university, college, trade or technical school, or other institut

Have you had an ECA done ? - HND's are generally thought of as a 'trade' certification rather than an academic one for ECA/EE purposes. (ICES will look at HND's I believe) https://www.bcit.ca/ices/eca/requirements/u.shtml

I'd suggest not deciding on a specific area or even Province at this time, better to look at where you might be able to get a job and Provincial Nomination to increase your points - hint 'Atlantic Provinces or BC!'

Thanks for the reply. I looked at this old thread https://britishexpats.com/forum/cana...canada-856677/ and it says

The 2-year BTEC (NVQ 3) diploma is approx to 2 year full time college diploma in Canada

The HNC, approx NVQ 3 + a bit

The HND is approx equivalent to a 3-year full time Canadian college diploma
Hubby has done a BTEC & a HND

What do you think?

Also, to change the qualifications into canada approved qualifications it states

These documents must be sent directly to ICES from your educational institution or educational authority.
What do you do when it's been 14+ years?! I don't even think the exam board exists anymore!

Vocational qualifications have no equivalency in Canada. BTEC is not assessed and as HND is equivalent to approx year 2 of a degree, but is a vocational diploma, I am not sure an HND would be given an equivalency. Sometimes they do, sometimes no. Depends on the subject.

None of the sites i'm looking at say whether it is or not, or I'm just being blind. Any idea where I can look? The link above is just gobledygook.

In order to get 112 point for Immigration purposes the HND would have to be the equivalent of a 3 year full time course - which it isn't.

Concentrate on the Academic aspect for Immigration rather than the equivalency for employment purposes. You are not "changing the qualifications into approved Canada qualifications - that would be for employment purposes. You need to work out what - if any - equivalency they have to an academic education in Canada - such as a degree, masters, 4 year diploma, grade 12, or what ever.

The ONLY way you can ascertain exactly what the equivalency is (if any) for Canada Immigration purposes is to have them assessed by one of the approved bodies - which you will need to provide to claim the points for education if you intend to apply through Express Entry anyway. The link you provided from an older thread was about getting admission into a Uni - nothing to do with equivalency for Immigration

Where can I get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)?

Do look at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...h-skilled.html as there would not be the need for the same level of education (points wise) etc., and could be a way to PR for you.
As I mentioned in your other thread, there's a company who are approved for the Global Talent Stream that may be worth getting in contact with or else looking at the jobs advertised on their website. https://britishexpats.com/forum/cana...ancies-899238/

Nope, it doesn't, you're right. Neither of the qualifications mentioned would get any points IMO, as they're both professional/vocational, rather than academic. At best it may be a 2 year diploma, but I'm not sure it will count - could be worth a try though. Perhaps if it was classroom based (full-time) rather than work based, it may be allowed.

IMO, the OP should apply for an ECA & IELTS asap so that they know for sure what their CRS scores are, and can get things moving (with every birthday, points will drop further now). Even if they need a job offer they'll still presumably want to apply for PR further down the line, so the ECA/IELTS wouldn't be wasted anyway.

Yeah we are hoping to ally asap for all this stuff.

The BTEC and HND were both fulltime class room based so hopefully that will count for something.

I'm so confused. I've signed up to WES to get the certificates sorted. It wants transcripts but where do I send the form they want me to fill out? https://applications.wes.org/OnlineA...pt_Request.pdf I have contacted the college that it was done at and they have passed me onto the examination board as they don't hold that kind of stuff. So i'm looking on the website and it has the form to fill out. But do I request a Replacement Certificate or Qualification Confirmation? And do I not need to fill in that form above, just put WES address in the delivery.

You need the full academic transcript i.e. a list of all modules/subjects taken, scores in each, and education institutes decision on award of qualification. The certificate is not in itself enough. Academic transcripts are normally provided by the institution opposed to the exam board.

And it is much simpler and usually quicker if your former institution will send them directly to WES. It takes hassle out of the process because you don't have to concern yourself with WES's very strict postage methods (although it is worth providing the institution with a copy of this information, in case they're not used to dealing with WES).

Also, even if you actually have a copy of your full academic transcript you cannot send this, it still has to come from the institution in a sealed envelope with their stamp on the back.

I've emailed the exam board to see what they say.

I emailed the college and they sent these responses.

A replacement certificate for your National Diploma in Computing can be obtained by applying on-line to the awarding body qualifications.pearson.com . On their website you will find a link to certificate services. Our centre number is **** and your BTEC registration number was *******. Our HE department will need to reply regarding your HND certificate as they will have details of who to contact at ********** University.
I sent this

I'm using a company called WES ( https://www.wes.org/ca/ ) and they need a transcript plus the certificate. will pearsons have the transcript aswell please?
They Replied

I would guess that a transcript is just another name for a certificate/notification of performance. The notification of performance will list all the units you achieved. Pearson should be able to issue this when you make an application.
