Visitor Visa Advice Please.

Visitor Visa Advice Please.
Hi
My son is in Canada on a visitor visa which expires 6th March 2007.
He sent off the paperpork to extend his visitor visa for a futher 6 months to the office in Vegrevile some 4 weeks ago and as yet ..........nothing.
Should he contact them by telephone as he doesnt want to get into any problems with immigration should is current visa expire before getting the requested extension.
Is it legal for him to remain in Canada until he hears from Vegreville? or should he be ready to leave on March 6th.
