Default TWP Route

My partner has been offered a job in Edmonton Alberta. Initially the job will be for 3 years.

The company has said before travelling to Canada, workers must provide them with copies of:

Valid passport this has been received by them

Certified documentation showing no criminal convictions/felonies (includes DUI’s) We are waiting for the certificate to come through so we can send on

Proof of work qualifications. This has been received by them

Is this for the LMO? Or will this be for the TWP? Or both?

I don't know the process of whats going to happen.

After we send in his Certified documentation showing no criminal convictions/felonies, what will be the next step.

We've asked the company so many questions already, I don't want to keep bugging them.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Edit. I just read through our correspondence again, and its an E-LMO she referred to, does that make any difference?

Default Re: TWP Route

Just got an email from the Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry. It fully answers my question. Just thought I'd pop it on here in case anyone else had the same questions as me.

Below is the typical step by step process of how foreign nationals come to work in Alberta temporarily and avail the Alberta PNP to apply for permanent residency:

Step 1 – Foreign National Obtain a Job Offer, and meet professional practice standards if applicable

In order to come to work temporarily - on a work permit, the first step is to find a job in Alberta - finding an employer who would offer you a job in your field of expertise. Please find some websites below where you can check available jobs in Alberta.

Your resume and cover letter are important tools for job search. Since how such application documents are written up can vary greatly in different regions of the world, you may find the Resume Services on the Alberta Government’s information web site very helpful: http://www.alis.gov.ab.ca/hotline/resume.asp

Some job search web site:

http://www.alberta-canada.com/jobs for job opportunities posted by Alberta employers that are looking to hire foreign workers

Alberta First

Job Banks for Alberta

National Job Bank of Canada

Employment websites

Alberta Newspaper Listing:

This page includes the career section of the newspapers from Calgary, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Grand Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Red Deer. http://www.alis.gov.ab.ca/employment/jp/abnewspaper.asp

International tradespersons must meet the certification requirements for compulsory trades (not optional trades) in Alberta. Employers must ensure that tradespersons recruited via the temporary foreign worker program have made arrangements with the regulatory body for assessment and certification. For information about the Qualification Certification Program for foreign trained tradepersons to prove their skills and work experience and a list of Compulsory and Optional Trades, please visit the website of Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) at

http://www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca/in..._in_trade.html

Step 2 – Employer applying for Labour Market Opinion (LMO), unless exempted, or the Expedited LMO if eligible

After an Alberta employer identifies a foreign worker s/he is interested in hiring, the employer needs to apply for a LMO with Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) - an approval from the federal government to hire foreign workers (except this is a job exempted from the LMO requirement). Please note that some employers may already have a pre-approval of the LMO prior to issuing job offers to specific individuals. Once the employer has recruited a specific foreign worker, she/he needs to forward the individual's info to HRSDC to receive a LMO confirmation. Once the employer receives a positive LMO confirmation, she/he will have to send the prospective foreign worker a copy, along with the job offer or employment contract (if the occupation is of low skills category) which has to be signed by both your prospective employer and you. The processing time for a regular LMO is about 5-6 months, and 4-6 weeks for confirming a pre-approval. For your info, here’s the HRSDC web page on this topic: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/workplaces..._workers.shtml

Thirty three occupations are qualified for the Expedited LMO (E-LMO) process, please see further info at the Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) web site at http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/workplaces...ers/elmo.shtml

Step 3 – Foreign workers applying for Work Permit and Visa (if necessary)

The third step is for the prospective foreign worker to apply for a Work Permit at a Canadian visa office overseas with the job offer and a copy of the positive LMO (if necessary). Here is an application package and instructions: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...tions/work.asp. The application needs to be submitted to a Canadian visa post in his/her home country, country of residence, or a country where s/he’s legally admitted into. Please be referred to the following web site to determine where the application should be submitted to: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...ices/index.asp
Please note that a work permit is NOT a travel document, and foreign nationals of certain countries will require a temporary resident visa to enter Canada – please consult Citizenship and Immigration Canada web site for this requirement and further info: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp .
Temporary foreign workers are responsible for proving they are qualified to meet the job requirements, and CIC’s requirements regarding admission to Canada including health and security checks. In some cases an immigration medical examination is required before coming to Canada. More information on immigration medical requirements can be found at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...exams-temp.asp

The decision to issue a work permit is in the discretion of the CIC visa officer reviewing the application.

Optional Step 4 – Applying for permanent residency via Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), if you are interested in staying in Canada permanently

The AINP is an expedited permanent resident program between Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Province of Alberta. The AINP is administered by Alberta Employment and Immigration and it supports Alberta employers in attracting and/or retaining foreign nationals who will contribute to the labour force in Alberta. It is important to know that the employer driven steams of AINP require an employer to nominate a foreign worker, and foreign nationals cannot apply directly to the program.

The AINP currently has the following streams and categories:

Employer driven stream
Skilled worker category
International graduate category
Semi-skilled worker category (including trades)
Food and beverage processing industry
Hotel and lodging industry
Food and beverage servers and room attendants
Front desk agent/clerk
Manufacturing industry
Trucking industry
Food Services Industry (Pilot)
Family stream
Self-employed farmer stream
For more information on the skill level of occupations, please refer to the following website: www23.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/2001/e/generic/matrix.pdf

Once a foreign worker starts working for a company in Alberta s/he can negotiate with his employer to offer him a permanent job and to nominate him for a permanent residence through AINP. This program facilitates fast-tracked permanent residence processing of skilled workers and some specific occupations in the semi-skilled occupations (including long haul truck drivers). Employer Eligibility, Candidate Eligibility, and Application Forms for different categories can be found on the right hand side under relevant sub sections on the PNP web site at www.alberta-canada.com/ainp . Within each Application Form, please review the instructions on required supporting documents as you prepare for the applications.

There is no fee to apply for the PNP.
