I'm an Englishman who's applied to emigrate to Canada (hopefully Vancouver, British
Columbia). Could someone please give me a rough idea of taxation levels in Canada -
eg income tax, consumptiuon tax, local government tax...

I'm an Englishman who's been in Canada since 1989 (very happily) and in BC
since 1993.
The best resource is http://www.tax.ca/taxtools/tools/200...lc.cfm?p=1&c=1
Just drop in your expected salary and away you go! Note the rates do get changed a
bit from budget to budget, but you'll get a good idea. The levels vary from province
to province because there is a different provincial income tax in each, though the
federal income tax is country-wide.
Alberta usually wins!

Oh and the second part of your question -- other taxes. Local taxes (rates) are
similar to UK There is a Fed Sales Tax (called GST, like VAT) and in most provinces
(Alberta the exception) a Provincial Sales Tax on most goods. The GST plus
PST in BC is 15%
What kind of job will you be doing?

Excellent information, Steph... gives one a good idea of taxes, in
(extremely)simple terms.
Thanks for sharing. -Lute.
