Tax Question
I moved from the US to Canada (as a PR) in November last year (2003).
I became a PR in Dec 2002 (had landed then). I am wanting to file my
tax returns. Can someone advise me if I will need to file tax returns
for the entire year or for the duration I have started to live in
Canada. I still am working in the US, so get my W2's. What would I
need to file my Canadian tax returns and some direction on this would
be highly appreciated.
Regards,
Raj

Re: Tax Question
If you didn't move to Canada (only landed) then you are not Canadian
resident for tax purposes at all and you don't file Canadian tax return.
If you physically moved and reside in Canada but you commute to work in US
then you file tax return in Canada declaring your income earned since the
day you really moved here.

Re: Tax Question
You dont have to file for 2003 in Canada.,,,,,you are not a tax redident in
Canada, as you need to live there 183 days in a year to be liable for taxes.
It could be more complex going forward, but as you have just landed I assume
you have no rental or divident income etc, from Canada.

Re: Tax Question
My understanding is that you still need to file tax returns
even if you live in Canada for less than half year. I moved to
canada in 1999 July 10 or something like that...
I still filed tax for that year (surely I lived less than half
year.)
Suggestion: go to post office and get the tax rerun instruction,
it tells you all things.
good luck!

Re: Tax Question
The issue is that he didn't move to Canada at all - he only landed and
returned to US. He is not a resident and never was so far.
