Hello Jacob,

You are not allowed to work while on a student visa EXCEPT on campus in work related
to your field of study such as a teaching assistant.

How about if I am studying acting. Would I be allowed to do off campus jobs at
all? Or is there no exceptions to working off campus. Thank you so much for your
quick response.

Jacob

Hello Jacob,

If the employment is conducted within the framework of an academic discipline and the
"off campus" site could be construed to be an extension of the campus then I would
think it would be OK. The principle being applied here it the protection of Canadian
and Permanent residents' right to find work ahead of those who are here for other
reasons. So jobs in theatres such as ticket takers, ushers, administrators, promoters
etc would not be allowed. These are jobs that would go first to residents.

A foreign student can also request an open employment authorization if they become
indigent through no fault of their own. For instance if you were receiving a subsidy
from your home country and the subsidy suddenly stopped for reasons you had nothing
to do with then you would likely be able to obtain permission to work off-campus.

Hi,

Yes. I was a student at Dal in Halifax, NS, and was allowed to work for 20 hours per
week on campus. I think the number of hours is set by the university.

I know other students who have indirectly worked outside the university by getting
your employer pay you indirectly via your dept. (like a scholarship or something).

Shibu.

Foreign students are allowed to work on campus in Canada. There are exceptions in
some cases in which employment is required as part of the completion of the
studies (ie, research projects). Otherwise, an employment authorization would
generally be required.

BQ Actually a student can work anywhere on campus. It is the post-graduation
employment that requires you to get a job related to your academic field.
