Hi everybody, I would like your advice/comments on this particular situation. I am a
permanent resident of Canada and I recently sent the application to sponsor my wife
from India under the new Pilot Project. The CPC office at Mississauga received the
application on 15th May. I am yet to receive the AOR. Meanwhile, my wife has been
offered admission in a graduate program (MA in Economics possibly leading to a
Ph.D)at the University of Calgary. She has also been awarded limited financial aid
- enough to cover her tution but not enough to pay for all her living expenses. My
question: what are her chances of obtaining student authorization at this juncture
when there is already an application for PR in progress ? She is to start her
course from Fall 2001 and so she needs to be in Calgary by end of August. Any
help/comments will be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot. -Nilanjan

Hi:

Your wife could always apply for a temporary student authorization despite the fact
that she has submitted an application for Canadian permanent residency.

In order to qualify for a student visa your wife will have the onus of satisfying a
visa officier that she intends on returning back to her home country once the student
authorization expires.

If your wife has insufficient finds for a student visa, you may want to write a
letter of support indicating that you undertake to provide your wife with the
necessary support so that she does not resort to Canada's welfare system.

Yours truly, Ingrid Y. Chen, B.A., LL.B.
