Setting up a BC branch of a Japanese language school
Greeting to all!
A long story follows, so let me just get down to it J
Background information:
I own (as a proprietor) and manage an “English Language Conversation
School” in the suburbs of Tokyo. We have been in business for over 13
years now.
The school has grown quite a bit in recent years and I have been thinking
about expanding and supplementing our existing local language programs here
in Japan by opening a “branch school” in BC (possibly in/around Squamish)
area to provide intensive summer courses, year-round video conferencing
based courses as well as homestay and summer camp programs and to recruit
local teachers to work in our school in Japan.
Objectives:
Immediate or short-term plans include:
1. Lease of office space of approx. 200-300 sq. ft.
2. Registering/incorporating a company in BC
3. One Full-time employment for office/school manager in Vancouver
4. A full-time two-year, renewable contract for a qualified ESL teacher to
work in Japan
5. Several P/T positions for local ESL instructors to manage video
conferencing based courses.
Longer-term benefits will include:
1. Summer ESL programs for our students, partners’ students and others with
an acquired/existing target market of approx. 2,500 students, with a 2%
success rate based on our previous experience.
Questions:
1. How do we go about opening (establishing) a business in BC?
2. What do we apply for, where and how and in what order?
3. What are the requirements for doing so?
4. Since this is going to be a pretty much “seasonal/summer business” at
least to start - is this acceptable in terms of having an ‘active
business” for only 3-4 months in a year?
5. Any other practical information, referrals, contacts and suggestions you
might have will be very appreciated.
Sincerely yours,
Robert Chomentowski
