Sending passports(for visa stamp) to a country - where you are not residing
Hi,
I am currently in USA(native of India) on H1B visa since Jan 2000.
Before coming to USA I had applied for Canadian PR as independant
immigrant(in New Delhi, India - Canadian High Comm.) and was issued a
visa in Dec 1999. I had to return back the visa due to change in my
marital status. After my move to USA, I had also informed the Canadian
High Comm. in India about this. After some processing delays the
Canadian High Comm.(India) is now ready to issue me the visa. However
they are asking me to send original passports(of self and family) for
visa stamp and have mentioned that this process can take upto 4
months.
(1) Is it legal to send passport overseas by Post/ Courier ?
(2) Is it OK to send passports with some family members to India ?
(3) If I do send passports to them and require the passports for some
reason(I am in US on non-imm visa - H1B), then what do I need to do ?
Thanks in advance for the replies. Would appreciate if anyone facing
similar problems now/in past gives some advice.

1. to india, no..
2. yes..
3. keep a copy of the passport with you, that should be sufficient for most reasons why you would need to prove your immigration status..

Thanks for the information.
Is it feasible to make a request to Canadian High Commission(New
Delhi) to intimate the CHC in USA so that I can get a visa stamp(for
Canada PR) here in USA ? Or will they be stubborn - to get visa
stamping done at the same High Commission where application is
processed ?
Thanks.

Visa can only be issued and affixed in the passport by the visa office
processing the application.

Its a long story !!!!
I recd. imm. visa in Jan 2000 which I had to return since my marital
status changed in Dec. 1999. I moved to USA in Jan 2000 and informed
them of my change in address. After that all communications were slow.
I filed for my wife in Aug 2000 and I got medicals done in May 2002.
They are ready to issue visas in Sept 2002.

I am in a similar situation. I have qualified as a dependant on my moms app. I am in the US on an H1 b too. I dont want to go to india and wait for the high commision to issue the visa. Apparently I can't send the passport to india either. Is there any other option you guys can think of?
