I am a permanent resident of Canada and married to my Canadian husband who is a
citizen. Very soon I will be visiting Australia to spend an extended time with my
children and new grandchild. Is it necessary for me to apply for a returning
resident's permit? If I leave Canada without it, will I risk not being permitted
entry into Canada on my return? I could be gone for approx 6 months.

If you will be absent from Canada for more than 183 days (cumulative) in any 12
months period then on the re-entry you will have to prove that you haven't abandoned
Canada as a place of permanent residence and didn't have such intentions when
leaving. The best way to support your claim is to have valid RRP - it is better to
apply for such before leaving. RRP is not a guarantee for a problem free re-entry,
but you will prevent majority of possible hassles just by having it.

Thank you Andrew, is there a fee associated with this permit and approx how long does
it take to acquire? Can I acquire it by going direct to an immigration office?

The fee is $75.00 and the application can be found here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/coming/ereturn.html

You should submit application to the nearest CIC office - you may try your luck and
do it in person, although it is highly unlikely to get RRP "on the spot". The process
may take few days to few weeks depending from the workload of the particular office.
