Retiring in Canada using a 6 month tourist visa?
Hi everyone,
As a UK citizen and non resident of Canada i am looking for some information on the 6 month tourist visa.
Ideally me and my wife would like to retire in Canada and bring up our young son there (we have income from a property portfolio in the UK to support us) but understand that we will need to apply for a PR visa to make it a permanent move, which we will eventually apply for (I should have enough points for FWSC). In the meantime, we would like to buy a place in Canada and use the 6month tourist visa to enter Canada to stay there for 6 months of the year. We would then return to the UK when the visa expires.
So a couple of questions really; is it acceptable to use the tourist visa this way? Also, when leaving Canada, how long would we need to have left before being allowed to come back on another 6month tourist visa?
Many thanks,
Matt

Yes it is possible but the final decision will rest with the examining officer as it is up to 6 months. As for how long returning between visits that is too subjective an answer and will depend on circumstances.
Just from your initial post you state you want to eventually make a permanent move so you need to convince an officer from the offset that you intend to return to the UK. When would you be applying for PR or is this a longer term process? You need to supply a bit more info on your timeline and plans before more answers can be given and even then they will only be possible answers based on your current situation.

What are you scoring on the CRS? If it’s enough to get an ITA in the next draw, then PR via FSW would only take 6 months or so anyway. So by the time you’ve found a property, bought it, and wrapped things up in the UK you could have PR so no need for visitor status (as UK citizens, you don’t need a visitor visa).
if you do go as a visitor just be aware that you won’t be eligible for things like healthcare, driving licences etc, and do bear in mind you’ll need to prove you intend to return to the UK so make sure you’ve got ties to show. As FL said, it is up to six months, so you could be given much less, don’t assume you’ll get the full six months.
Good luck.

Hi
1, As an aside the OP mentions a young son. Visitors can't attend school and the child would require a study permit and pay international fees.
