Default RCMP Police Clearance

FYI,

RCMP Police clearance from Canada can take up to 5 months to obtain. We
submitted one in Mid June and only received it end of November.

Blanco, can you give us more details about your request? Things like
why you applied for it and when you sent it out. Many people have
generally agreed (including the RCMP sites/agents I've spoken with)
that it takes 5months AT LEAST. I'm curious to know how yours came
out so quickly. A timeline would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is there any way to contact RCMP (will they actually reply?) to find out
what the status is of one's police clearance application? I submitted my
wife's in early September I believe.

Yep: http://www.rcmp.ca/crimrec/finger_faq_e.htm

I emailed them (I notice that they have since removed the email link from that page, but it's [email protected])

This is an exact quote of the response I received (minus my personal info):

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear [my name],

Your request for the verification of a criminal record search for "Visa" purposes refers.

Your request was entered into our database on: August 28,2003.

CFSS processes more than 15,000 criminal record searches each month. The processing time is currently in excess of one hundred and fifty (150) days from receipt of an application. Note that processing time can vary due to incoming workloads.

Once your request has been processed, the result will be forwarded to:

[my address]

You may wish to visit our Internet Website at:
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/crimrec/finger_e.htm for a complete overview of our service.

Sincerely,

[don't think I should include their name]

Have you emailed them recently and received a reply back?

I heard somewhere that they are no longer responding to emails and voice
mails?

Getting an RCMP clearance can take less than 5 months. I submitted my fingerprints to the RCMP on about 22 Sept 2003. In mid-Nov I sent email to the RCMP (as CalgaryAMC did) to ask how much longer I would have to wait, and got a standard reply, saying it would take a total of 150 days. Then, around 20 Nov, I got the clearance letter, so the actual total time was about 60 days.

I don't know why there is such a large variation in processing times, or why the quoted time is so different from the actual time. By comparison, the FBI and California police quoted about 30 days to provide a clearance letter, and they actually did it in that time.

Hmmm... I probably sent mine in abit earlier then yours. Was your
application under skilled workers/independent class or family class? What
is your country or residence btw? I guess that sometimes makes a difference.

Thanks

My email to them was dated 17th November, I received the reply the very next
day.

I have noticed that since then they have put up the 150 day notice on the
web site - which wasn't there when I emailed them - and they have also
removed their email address. So I suppose it is possible that they are no
longer responding.

I am applying in the family class (my wife is a Canadian citizen) - applying within Canada. We moved to Canada, from the USA, in July 2003, so I am here as a visitor. I lived in Canada until 1998, so I have to get RCMP clearance. I got my fingerprints taken in the main police station in Hamilton (Ont), and mailed the request for clearance to the RCMP, Civil Fingerprinting Screening Services, in Ottawa.

I said on the request form that I was applying for clearance for immigration purposes, but I don't think that I said that I was applying in the family class, so I doubt that it makes a difference.
I have been in touch with an immigration attorney in Hamilton, who told me that normally RCMP clearances come within 60 days, though from other posts on this forum it is clear that it can take longer.

Dave.
