Default PR Cards expired while abroad

Our family is going back to the U.K until next summer due to unforseen circumstances back home.

Our PR cards expire in April and we will be travelling back June / July.

Will it be a problem coming back through immigration or should we apply for PR travel documents before coming back?

If anyone has similar experience or any advice?

Every time we've passed through immigration since getting it in 2014 they've always paid little or no attention to our PR cards.

Thanks

You will need your PR cards for entrance back into Canada. My daughter applied for her’s in October...she was contacted in February (5 mths after applying) asking for her other passport. Still not received anything.

She applied for PR renewal from outside of Canada?

As a quick follow up to my original post -

I have been in contact with the Canadian consulate in London U.K,and they have confirmed we could apply for residency travel documents that would allow us to travel back into Canada.
