My passport with the PR Visa was returned today!
1. Since I am living in Canada, would like to cross the border at 1000
Islands (Gananoque) and make a U-turn before the U.S. border in order to
return for "landing." Is this possible? Where can I find the hours of the
crossing/immigration offices?
2. How long should the landing procedure take? I want to bring my dog for
company, but I don't want to leave him in the car too long.
3. I will bring every document I can think of, but is there any special
advice for completing this procedure?
Many thanks for all the help and advice over the past weeks. I will post my
timeline ASAP.

You are crazy!! do you think they are not going to come charging after you wondering why you did a U-turn in front of their border crossing? That is a red flag!! By law you are supposed to go through the US border and back through the Canadian side, between the US/Canada border is limbo land, you will be up to your neck in guards.

I forgot to add, try staying on the Canadian side and getting to their building without ending up in limbo land or on the US side, I've done this before and I was able to get over to the Can. side.

Absolute Rubbish. I have done a U-turn in limbo land several times and
never had any problems whatsoever. Last time I did it right in front
of a border guard and he didn't even blink.

Yes I am crazy. Thanks for reminding me. Despite your kind advice, I made
the dreaded U turn at the 1000 Islands crossing point. Just as you warned,
"guards" swarmed from everywhere. Countless magazines from M16s and
Romanian-made Kalashnikovs (much cheaper than those from other members of
the former Warsaw Pact)
were emptied in my direction. Fortunately, I was driving an armoured 1998
Jeep Cherokee. Although the Jeep looked like Bonnie and Clyde's final car, I
was miraculously unhurt.
You have chosen to spout off to someone who has, in fact, crossed a few
"unfriendly" borders in his day. What do you think the conditions are on the
border between the US and Canada? Landing was a lovely, peaceful experience
that took place on the world's longest UNGUARDED border--unless you count
the sidearms of the US Customs folks. I am so glad that this immigration
process is over. I, too, became worried and anxious, but, hey, it's a
bureaucratic process and not really dangerous. Many people have offered
invaluable help and advice in this forum. Others are full of hot air. But
thanks to all. The one group for the help, the other for the laughs.

Hi jack.
I received my PR Visa today. I am going to go to the border post at niagara falls this weekend and land from there.
Can you tell me what documents did you carry with you and what did the immigration officer ask you?
Did you carry any bank statements/ pay stubs etc? How long did the process take? Thanks.

Jack,
One more question. Will you now apply for the PR card or do thge new comers not need to apply for the PR card? They automatically get it when they land? Let me know. Thanks.

Hi!
First of all, despite my joking I did have to enter the US, make a U-turn
and come back into Canada. I brought MANY documents with me, but they only
asked to see a bank statement. I said sure here it is, but I said also I'm
being sponsored by my Canadian wife and thought we didn't have to show
further financial docs. I said this sort of as an aside. She (the
immigration employee) literally glanced at the statement. The whole thing
took just minutes, but then again 1000 Islands is not the biggest crossing
point I'm sure. Next I was directed to customs. One must present a list
(fairly detailed) of all accompany good entering Canada (none in my case)
and all those to follow, This list must be presented right then or be
completed on the spot (my case, since I wasn't prepared--I thought I'd have
plenty of time to this). I left my home at 10 am drove to 1000 Islands
(about 1 1/2 hours away). On the way back I applied fpr OHIP and SIN card in
Kingston. I was home by 4:30 or so!! The only real questions were about my
address. I guess it is unusual to have an out of Canada applicant already
living in Canada. I was here legally of course and they didin't ask to see
the visitor visas I brought. My advice would be to bring a files of anything
you think may be releevant in addition to the passport and docs you received
when passport was returned. You will probably bring all this back unused,
but I felt better having it along. They told me the PR card would come to
me automatically in about 8 weeks. All in all a pleasant and unremarkable
process. After all the paperwork and waiting one expects balloons and
confetti, but its just routine to them. My only disapointment was that no
one said "Welcome to Canada!" the way I've heard it said before.
All the best to you!
Forgive the sloppiness of my reply. I'm tired today. I' getting old for this
immigration stuff. Please contact me with any farther questions.
PS I guess Niagra is open on the weekend for immigration? Make sure.
Remember too that Monday is a national holiday.

Jack,
Did you have to carry any photos? I have read some postings in the forum where people had to give photos during landing. My Confirmation of PR form, which came with the PR visa, has a photo stuck on it. Do I need more photos?
Thanks for your help.

Ditto response from boon. I had pictures with me (Be Prepared) but they were
not needed. Good luck with all the last formalities.

hi,
can someone tell me what is the "record of landing". I landed on saturday at niagara falls. The immi officer filled my "confirmation of PR" form and gave back three copies to me. Which one I am supposed to keep in my passport. He gave me back the copy with my photo.
There is no stamp on the confirmation of PR form.. but only on the passport next to the immigrant visa.
Thanks.
