To receive an immigrant visa she must have a valid passport.

Cool Re: passport

Bob,
My friend from India and I were planning a little roadtrip to Canada. They told him that he would need a visa in addition to his passport. They told him that I, as a US citizen, only need proof of my citizenship - my birth certificate and a state ID or driver's license. Also, my mother goes to Canada quite a bit. and she also said that I only need my birth certificate and photo ID.

This is what I've heard. I'd look into it more to be sure. Good luck and congratulations

It's true that to visit Canada, a US citizen does not
have to have a passport.

But to immigrate there, a passport is required.
