On the contrary - the mismatch between the typical passport size (most passports will
fit comfortably in a shirt pocket), and the IMM1000 size (a legal-sized sheet of
paper) makes it rather -easy- to tear out the staple, connecting it to a passport
page. This usually happens by the end of the first week in Canada ...

I'm really happy they are finally issuing a decent piece of ID for landed
immigrants... IM1000 is a joke and could be falsified very easy, it was also fragile
and could get lost or damaged too...

I saw on TV last week, some immigrants complaining with the introduction of the Maple
Leaf ID Card because they said immigrants are being discriminated by implementing
this card... Can you believe this ?? People complaining for the introduction of the
new Maple Leaf card is because of their illegal status. Immigration Canada should
have implemented this system long time ago as Americans did with their Green Cards...
Nevertheless I hope the goverment covers the fees of the new cards to promote it's
quick adoption....

Yes, you shouldn't worry as long as your absence from Canada will not exceed the
total of 183 days in any 12 months period. Family living in Canada and residence
maintained here will also provide the proof of your intentions and substantial ties
to Canada during the absence.
