Native English speaker needing an English test?

This is a long way off for me but I’m curious if any native English speakers had to do the English test? From what I could gather, individual A levels may not count and your degree had to be wholly taught in English to qualify (I studied abroad in a foreign language for 1/3 my degree). I also have a TESOL certificate so I’m hoping I can use that to avoid the test when the time comes but would like to hear other people’s experiences and whether I’ve misunderstood the rules.

Is this for a citizenship app, or a visa app? If a visa app, which one? The requirements differ.

My husband and I are native English speakers and did all our schooling/studies in the UK, but we still completed IELTS exams as it was a requirement for our application (Express Entry route to Permanent Residency, via a provincial nomination).

Just suck it up, Buttercup.

My husband and I are both native English speakers.
I have a degree in English language & literature, completed in England.
My husband has a PhD, also completed in England.
We both still had to complete the English tests.
It feels like an utter waste of time and $, but it’s just part of the process I’m afraid.

Oh wow. When I read the information it looked like completing secondary or post-secondary education in English could exempt you from the English test. Did I misunderstand that?

You're applying for citizenship right? I am a Brit by birth who is now also a Canadian citizen and I have never sat an English test - for citizenship, or FSW Cat 1 Permanent Residence status (wasn't necessary at the time).

If high school (graduate at age 18) is all you've got, unless you have some kind of certificate to prove it, it could be less risky/less hassle to simply take CELPIP LS (Listening and Speaking) which is specifically for Canadian Citizenship:

It can't be one subject, it has to be all subjects - the whole program, so to speak; so complete secondary education including A levels or a post-secondary course that lasted several years. You would have to prove that all of your education/courses were taught in English - which is a lot harder than it sounds!
I graduated from an English-or French-language high school/college/university. What can I use to show that I can communicate in one of the official languages when I apply for citizenship?

If you did IELTS or similar for your PR application, you may be able to use those results.
Otherwise, far easier - as Snowy said - to take the CELPIP ... or wait until you are 55 :p

I do remember both my wife and I had to submit transcripts of our UK acquired university degrees when applying for citizenship. Perhaps that is what exempted us from sitting a test.

I seem to remember that Stinkypup also submitted his transcript for Citizenship and it was originally refused until they wrote the magic words on it that it was taught in English.. I managed to find the posts (there's more on the same thread):

So for those who have taken IELTS recently for PR and get accepted etc, in a few years time when applying for citizenship, will have to retake CELPIP over there? Sounds bizarre, would have thought passing the language tests for PR would kinda show that you can speak the language to them.

As I understand it, IELTS certificates are only valid for 2 years, so will have expired by the time you can apply for citizenship.

An expired language test is okay for Citizenship.

Can I submit the results from a third-party language test that I took when I first applied to immigrate to Canada as proof I meet the citizenship language requirement?
