Maximum stay in Canada under workpermit (applying for Landed Status)
Hello,
I am currently applying for landed status - which is estimated to be
concluded by May of 2005. Currently I'm working in Canada, and have just
received a renewed work permit that will expire March 2005 - I tried
applying for two years, alas, they granted 1 year extension (despite
including letters from my employee stating they wish to employ me for 2
years more).. By the end of march 2005, I will have been in Canada for 3
years.
Therefore I am wondering the likelihood I shall be able to renew my work
permit for a 4th year? From what I understand, the maximum stay in Canada
for work permits is 4 years.. if your lucky... 3 years is the norm. Is
this correct? I really don't want to have to leave Canada for a few months
and then return upon successful completion of work permit.
What are my chances of be able to renew my work permit for a 4th year in
Canada?
Thank you.
Stewart

Where did you get information on 4 year limit.
As per my knowledge Canada does not have any preset limit on work permit
extension, I have seen postings which claimed 5+ years on work permit.
Yes, they usually always extend it (WP and VISA ) for 1 year, one reason may
be because you can stay in the country even if you loose the job unlike in
US, where you loose H1-B job and you need to leave immediately

Re: Maximum stay in Canada under workpermit (applying for Landed Status)
Thanks for your answer.
I thought I saw the 4 year limit before coming over here. However, all
other people I know also seem to think 4 years is the maximum stay in
Canada for successive work permits.
From your posting, I take it that I should have no problem in renewing my
work permit next year (which will be 4 years of being in Canada - whoo hoo!
:-> )
Thanks again,
Stewart

The reason that you might have a problem renewing your work permit is that
CIC is going to say that what you are doing is not a temporary job( the
purported purpose of work permits) but an indeterminate job. In that case
they and HRDC will question why a Canadian or PR has not be trained for the
position.

Thanks for replying.
I don't suppose that next year when I renew they will take into account
that my PR application should be a very short time away from being
concluded - successfully or unsuccessfully....
