Except that if you decide to do a Criminal Records Check, you don't want the name check, you want the fingerprint check. You also don't want the paper as it takes 4 months. You want to go to the Corp of Commissionaires or Comnetix International Fingerprinting Services results in less than a week.

Yes had to get police check from Toronto po po as I had been living here for >2 years.
I don't know if they "frown" upon you doing it this way but there is not much they can do about it and as my timeline shows it is far quicker.
