Default Landed Immigrant Status.

Hi everyone.

I am a UK Citizen, presently living in UK, and I would like to live and work
in Canada permanently at the earliest opportunity, (Saskatchewan.)

During a recent visit to Regina, I was told by numerous Ca nadians to apply
for Landed Immigrant Status.

Would someone please explain to me exactly what this is, and how do I apply
for it.

All help and avice would be greatly appreciated.

"Landed immigrant" is the common Canadian nickname for a non-citizen
permanent resident.

Being a permanent resident (or, to use the common slang, a "landed
immigrant") is the same kind of thing as having a "green card" in the
US, or having "indefinite leave to remain" in the UK.

What you would need to do is apply to immigrate to Canada. You can
find information on how to do this at:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.html

I would assume you're most likely going to be interested in what is
called "skilled worker class" immigration; click on the first link
amongst the bullet points. Your chances of being accepted for
immigration to Canada would depend on such factors as the amount
of schooling you have had; how much work experience you've had;
whether you can speak both English and French (being bilingual is
not mandatory, but it will give you extra points); your health; and
your (lack of a) criminal record.

Assuming you get accepted for immigration and do in fact immigrate
to Canada, you will become eligible (if you so desire) to apply for
Canadian citizenship after about three years. If you do eventually
become a Canadian citizen, you will NOT lose or have to give up your
British citizenship, so you will end up a "dual" citizen of both
countries. But that's several years in the future, so don't worry
about it right now.

"Landed", by the way, has absolutely nothing at all to do with owning
land or property in Canada. The reason permanent residents are called
"landed" immigrants is that the process of actually arriving in Canada
and going through the final bureaucratic formalities of immigration is
referred to as "landing".
