If you look around this newsgroup, you'll see this question has been asked a lot. The
"problem" is that you can lose your Canadian permanent residence status if you spend
183 or more successive days outside Canada. The way around this is to get a
"returning resident permit" which is not always granted.

Hello,
Here is my question: if I receive my landing papers, but have to complete an
employment contract, what is the best for me to do? Let's say my contract is for 2 or
3 years. Can I land in Canada after I receive my visa, then go back and finish my
contract for 1 or 2 years, and finally go to Canada and settle there permanently? I
hope that it would be acceptable to spend in Canada 3 or 4 years out of 5, in order
to receive the Canadian Citizenship...
Thank you...

No, it will not be acceptable at all. In order to maintain your PR status in Canada
you must make Canada a place of your permanent residence and live here. You may be
absent from Canada for up to 183 days in any 12 months period. Certain reasons
requiring longer absence (like family emergency or continuation of education) may be
accepted when applying for Returning Resident Permit, but working abroad for such
prolonged period will not be accepted. You will be deemed to have abandoned Canada as
a place of permanent residence. The only solution for you at this time is not to
land, return landing papers to the visa post, apply for the refund of ROLF and
re-apply for immigration visa again when you are ready to move to Canada.
