if you need to work and live in Canada as a PR, you must take the IELTS general training.
If your mother tongue( first language ) is English or French you still must prove it...giving letters from Colleges or Univ...
Merci

that means if i manage to get 7 band in each section of ielts i should be able to qualify for the full 16 points for language.also i had read somewhere not sure though that usually the validity of ielts score is for 2 yrs but for this immigration purpose its only valid for 1 yr is that right???

I immigrated to Canada from India in 2001, though I completed my graduation BSc in Chemistry with English as my first language, I never attempted ielts. Not sure if this is a new requirement though, I have a relative who is interested in coming. So would like to know if ielts is mandatory.

Hi
Unless you come from a country where the language is English, all your education, work and home language is English, you have to take Ielts. (there is an exception, but usually CHC will insist on Ielts)

hi,
Taking IELTS exam is the best shot. If you get 7 in each module will assure you of 16points. the officer looking into your application has to give you 16points.
if no ielts results are submitted there is a chance that he might give lesser points espically since your mother tougue is not english.
if you have good command over english, there is nothing to worry about taking the test. It is not so difficult. just some preparation to be done (eg:- going through old sample test papers, etc). I took the test myself and got 7.5, 8, 7, 8.
also it is general training you have to take.
