I think its 30 days but I am no expert. Also you can get H1b stamped in canada, shouldnt be a problem ...if you take the right papers. And yes they may easily stop you for entering US i.e. US authorities, so its not like 30 days is free come and go. and yes you can be on h1 and pr in canada as long as you follow 2/5 rule.

Greetings,
Some of the information in the reply below is not correct.
You have 30 days to send your passport to Buffalo, not 30 days to
land.
You must land within 1 year of the date of your medicals - that will
be the period of validity of your visa.
As for the H-1B visa stamping in Canada (as suggested below), don't
risk it.
Post 9/11, US consulates will not issue you a visa in a third-country.
Pre-9/11, you could go to Canada or Mexico and revalidate your H-1B
visa stamp.
Not any more.
There are only two recommended ways of doing it now - either via the
passport mailing to DoS at St. Louis or by going to your home country
(India, in your case).
From what I have heard, it is taking 4-6+ months to get the passport
back via the DoS visa revalidation service at St. Louis.
HTH some.

Your chosen name is very apt.
He is not living in Canada.
If he was, then he might have been able to get his H-1B stamped at an
US consulate in Canada.
If he has just landed, the US consulate will most likely ask him to
get the visa at his home country's consulate.
