Default INFO: Trades skills in demand in BC

For anyone in trades looking to Canada for opportunities, here is some key info from the Construction Sector Council:

$1.5bn planned expenditure on Olympics construction
Major investment in large scale projects - mining, pipelines, transportation, warehousing, Vancouver Airport, Sea-to-Sky Highway, Port of Vancouver.
Levels of activity and investment to continue through to 2013
Construction activity and employment to rise 50% to 2013
Continual rise in general trades labour demand to 2010 then slight fall off for 3 years.
Recruitment focus on youth, women, aboriginal, immigrants.
Recruiting labour from other industrial sectors.
Attracting labour from other regions to 2009
BC and AB will compete directly for skilled labour.
Housing starts stunted a little from 2005 due to other major construction projects, increased interest rates, labour shortage. But still at higher level, similar to 2004 scale. Reducing from 2007 through to 2013
Increase in smaller scale renovation projects, opportunity for multi-skilled trades people.

Hi Manny yet it really should be yet I remain realistically sceptical that the employers have enough nouse to motivate themselves to move with the demand....probably they will point the finger at the government and immigration and hold their hands up defending themselves and their own severe failure to seek out new sources of labour. Clearly anyone in the sector can see the looming problems.

Personally, my own experience of trying to identify a route for a trades apprenticeship has been so slothful and frustrating I may yet put it on the backburner. Employers are said to be screaming out for labour but there doesn't seem to be a real demonstration of this when you speak to people - it's the same old 'whatever' attitude, and I really do feel for any Brit tradesperson trying to get through to them here, especially for those based in the UK still.

The phrase 'banging head against a brick wall' is very apt.
